Sad news to hear that Dougherty’s Pub in Mount Vernon will close this month, as reported by http://www.citypaper.com/
Dougherty’s Pub (223 W. Chase St., 752-4059, doughertyspub.com), the Irish bar that’s been in Mount Vernon since the 1990s, will close its doors on Dec. 19, owner Bill Dougherty confirmed.
Doughtery, 65, said he wanted to end the bar on his own terms, rather than sell it under “dire circumstances” such as illness.
“I want it to be my choice, not if I had something wrong with me or something like that,” he said in a phone interview.
The pub first opened its doors in 1994. Before that, Dougherty and his family ran a bar called the Irish Pub, which opened in 1983 about 50 yards down the street.
Reflecting on his three decades in the industry, Dougherty noted the city’s bar scene has changed markedly in his time, from a ban on smoking indoors to the most recent craft cocktail explosion. He cited a recent write-up of The Drinkery, a dive-y gay bar on Read Street, in which the author asked for a cocktail menu.
“That’s the way things are evolving in Baltimore,” he said, adding, “We’re more like The Drinkery than we are a cocktail place.”
The space will be taken over by a new owner. City Paper is working to confirm the details.
